A gamepad and an FPV radio can send the same four flight commands, but they do not feel the same in your hands. The most useful choice depends on whether you are exploring drone flight or rehearsing with the physical controls you intend to use later.

A correctly mapped gamepad can teach orientation and stick coordination. A compatible radio can make the mechanical part of practice closer to a later radio setup. Neither choice makes calibration optional.

What transfers between them

Understanding throttle, yaw, pitch and roll transfers conceptually. Recognizing a developing bank or a late gate approach also remains useful. The physical amount of travel needed for a correction can change, however, and a spring-centered throttle builds a different release habit from a non-centering one.

If you change controller type, return to a broad circuit before trying your fastest lap. Recalibrate, keep the same stick layout where possible and allow time to learn the new center feel. Copying the old maximum rate does not guarantee identical small-stick precision.

How to configure a radio sensibly

Select the radio's documented joystick/game-controller connection mode if one is available. A USB port may serve charging, storage or firmware functions as well as joystick output. Seeing the device in a file browser does not establish simulator input.

Use a simple simulator model/profile in the radio. Check channel order and avoid unnecessary mixing. If both the radio and simulator apply curves, the final response can be difficult to interpret. Start with a transparent mapping, then add shaping in one understood place.

How to make a gamepad more usable

Verify analog range and use conservative center response. Bind essential actions where they are reachable without disturbing the sticks. Learn to move manual throttle deliberately back toward minimum; releasing a spring-centered stick is not a substitute for that action.

The gamepad setup guide provides a grounded check before flight. If a controller only exposes digital directions, it cannot provide the same continuous precision as a usable analog axis.

Drone Horizon's current position

The simulator routes supported physical inputs through the same normalized flight-command layer used by keyboard and touch. It provides manual binding, calibration and named hardware profiles. That architecture supports investigating generic gamepads and joystick-mode radios, but it does not certify every USB or Bluetooth device.

Consult the compatibility table, especially for Apple-device and DJI questions. A browser input demo can help inspect values but does not prove native simulator acceptance.

Choose for the next practical step

Use an available, working gamepad if your immediate objective is learning basic control. If you already own a radio for real FPV, prioritize verifying its simulator connection so practice uses familiar mechanics. Buying a more elaborate controller before you have a repeatable training task is unlikely to solve a poorly understood mapping or technique problem.
